A Competition initiated by LEXUS, titled LEXUS DESIGN AWARDS. Competition that challenges designers from across the world to solve pertinent issues through design and the 2017 theme was “Yet”
The story behind ABRA inspired by the moment when Djehovan sat waiting for his fiancé at a round table of outdoor café. At that time the rain had just let up. Vaguely appears the shade of trees when the sun began to emerge from behind the clouds. From across the cafe looks puddle that covered the streets. Remnants of oil in asphalt that insoluble with water produces stunning color spectrum, like a rainbow. Accompanied with the silence after the rain, quiet and calm.
Djehovan really enjoyed this kind of moment, the moment that he wanted to capture and translate into a design product. By using the natural characters of water and oil that couldn’t be mixed, he want to explore the potentials of the conflicting nature of these two substances into something that reach state of the art from function and aesthetic.
Thus was born the ABRA, a design product that stimulate users to experiment with the natural phenomenon of water and oil. ABRA has the dual function as decorative lighting and pot for the hydroponic plant. ABRA name itself was taken from an ancient Sanskrit word that means sparkling, very closely related to the functions and workings of the scientific nature of the two substances. refraction and the shadows which produced by ABRA will bring Djehovan back to the moment when he wants to propose his girlfriend in the cafe at the time.
How ABRA work
- Attach Ring to Base according a predetermined point
- Put enough water in a point that has been provided (At point A the water is used as a medium hydroponic plants, while in the point B, the water is used as a medium to experiment with oil)
- Hydroponic media plants are planted in Inner, then attach Inner to Base
- Take one pipette containing the oil and then drop it into one of the holes on Ring that has been provided to generate the color spectrum configuration. Each hole will produce a different color spectrum combinations from one to another.
- turn on the lights to activate the color spectrum which is created from the combination between oil and water. Lamp serves to shed light on the surface of the oil and water where the water has character to transmit light while oil can reflect light so as to create rainbow color effects on the surface of the oil. In addition, the lamp also serves to produce a shadow pattern of plants that affected by refraction of the light
